A simple recipe for making rich, spiced apple butter in your slow cooker, perfect for preserving fall flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 pounds apples (about 1215 medium), peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Place the prepared apples in a slow cooker.
  2. Add water, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-5 hours, until the apples are very tender.
  4. Carefully transfer the cooked apples and liquid to a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Alternatively, use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker.
  5. Return the pureed apple mixture to the slow cooker.
  6. Stir in the sugar and lemon juice.
  7. Uncover and cook on high for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apple butter has thickened to your desired consistency. It should be spreadable but not runny.
  8. Let cool slightly before transferring to jars.

Notes

  • For a smoother texture, you can press the cooked apples through a food mill before pureeing.
  • Adjust sugar and spices to your personal preference.
  • Apple butter can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or canned for longer storage.
  • This recipe makes a wonderful homemade gift.
