Ingredients
Scale
6 medium apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4-inch thick
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9-inch pie plate or an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice.
In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Add the cold butter cubes to the oat mixture. Use your fingertips or a pastry blender to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces.
Spread the coated apples evenly in the prepared baking dish.
Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples. If using, scatter the chopped nuts over the topping.
Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
Let the crisp cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
For a clumpy topping, ensure your butter is very cold and don’t overmix the streusel.
You can substitute other spices like ginger or cardamom for a different flavor profile.
This recipe is a great way to use up a bounty of fresh apples, similar to how meal planning can help utilize ingredients.
