Ingredients
Scale
1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
1 (15.25 ounce) box yellow cake mix
1 cup caramel bits or chips
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Pour the entire can of apple pie filling into the prepared baking dish. Spread it into an even layer.
Sprinkle the caramel bits evenly over the apple layer. If using, sprinkle the ground cinnamon over the caramel.
Pour the dry yellow cake mix directly over the caramel and apples. Do not stir.
Slowly drizzle the melted butter evenly over the entire surface of the dry cake mix. You want to cover as much of the dry mix as possible.
Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly around the edges.
Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm.
Notes
For an extra rich topping, substitute 1/2 cup of the cake mix with 1/2 cup of quick-cooking rolled oats before sprinkling.
Serve this dessert warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
If you prefer fresh apples, substitute the pie filling with about 6 cups of peeled, sliced apples tossed with 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
