A straightforward recipe for making delicious, natural applesauce from fresh apples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds apples (such as Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples into 1-inch pieces.
  2. Combine the chopped apples and water in a large pot or Dutch oven.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the apples are very tender. Stir occasionally.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat.
  6. Mash the apples with a potato masher or blend with an immersion blender until you reach your desired consistency. For smoother applesauce, you can use a food processor or blender.
  7. Stir in the sugar (if using), cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  8. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  9. Let the applesauce cool before serving or storing.

Notes

  • For a chunkier applesauce, mash the apples less.
  • You can add more or less cinnamon to your preference.
  • Applesauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • For longer storage, you can freeze the applesauce or can it.
