- 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
- 1 orange, sliced
- 6 whole cloves
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise
- 1/4 cup honey or sugar, or to taste
- 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
- Pour the red wine into a large pot or slow cooker.
- Add the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise to the pot.
- Stir in the honey or sugar.
- Heat the mixture gently over medium-low heat. Do not boil. Simmer for at least 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- If using, stir in the brandy during the last 5 minutes of simmering.
- Strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and orange slices before serving.
- Ladle into mugs and serve warm.
Notes
- Avoid boiling the wine, as this will evaporate the alcohol.
- Adjust the amount of honey or sugar to your preference.
- For a slower cooking method, use a slow cooker on the ‘warm’ setting for 2-3 hours.
