A simple recipe for warm, spiced red wine perfect for cozy gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour the red wine into a large pot or slow cooker.
  2. Add the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise to the pot.
  3. Stir in the honey or sugar.
  4. Heat the mixture gently over medium-low heat. Do not boil. Simmer for at least 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. If using, stir in the brandy during the last 5 minutes of simmering.
  6. Strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and orange slices before serving.
  7. Ladle into mugs and serve warm.

Notes

  • Avoid boiling the wine, as this will evaporate the alcohol.
  • Adjust the amount of honey or sugar to your preference.
  • For a slower cooking method, use a slow cooker on the ‘warm’ setting for 2-3 hours.
